Our story

Do opposites attract? The black cat—stoic, calm, collected, and mysterious. The golden retriever—playful, lighthearted, affectionate.

The beginning

We were introduced in 2018 over email. Jake, living in Madison, Wisconsin, was preparing for a major career move. Jon, in Denver, Colorado, was on the brink of financial ruin in his first year of law school.

In the summer of 2019, we met for the first time. Jake flew to Denver to spend a weekend with Jon and his Denver family. We threw frisbees in Washington Park and hiked through the Boulder Flatirons. When Jake left Denver, he flew straight to New York City to start a new season of fellowship with a camp sleeping pad on the floor of an overpriced closet. Jon immediately began looking for the quickest way to get to New York City.

Going the distance

The next 5 years were spent flying back and forth between Denver and New York as much as time and budgets allowed. The COVID pandemic came and left. Law school graduation and fellowship graduation. Work trips. Family visits. Vacation. 5 years of realizing we didn’t want to be apart.

In May 2024, Jon proposed to Jake in Central Park with a ring that was two sizes too small, and Jake said yes.

Two months later, Jake proposed to Jon with a ring one size too big, and Jon also said yes.

The Now

Now, in 2025, we live in NYC where our love of musical theater outweighs our disdain for the trash on the sidewalks. Our prolonged season of long-distance has made us appreciate the beauty in simple moments together: grocery shopping, working out, Saturday morning bagels and coffee. We can’t wait for you to join us on our wedding day to celebrate in a big way the small joys of connection and love.
